Rangers acquire lefty reliever Andrew Chafin from Tigers



The Detroit Tigers sent left-handed relief pitcher Andrew Chafin to the Texas Rangers in exchange for minor league right-handers Joseph Montalvo and Chase Lee, the Rangers announced Tuesday.

The veteran Chafin, 34, joins the defending World Series champions as they attempt to make a playoff push. Despite entering the day three games below .500, the Rangers are just 3.5 games out of the American League West lead.

Chafin has pitched to a 3.16 ERA in 41 relief appearances for the Tigers this season with a 3-2 record and one save in four opportunities. He has fanned 50 batters and walked 16 in 37 innings.

In an 11-year MLB career spanning five clubs, Chafin owns a 3.39 ERA a 20-26 record and 20 saves. He has 535 career strikeouts in 489 innings.

Montalvo, 22, has a 2.44 ERA across 59 innings in High-A this year. He’s the 27th-ranked prospect in Texas’ system, according to MLB.com.
