Wimbledon draw LIVE: Latest updates as Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu await fate

The Wimbledon draw takes place today as Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu learn their first-round opponents after entering the tournament as unseeded players.

Murray, the two-time champion, is expected to take place in the singles draw despite admitting he may not be ready to compete after undergoing an operation on his spine, but he may still play doubles with his brother Jamie.

Raducanu is back at Wimbledon after missing last year’s tournament due to injury, with the former US Open champion taking a wildcard. She will play 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round.

Elsewhere, women’s No 1 Iga Swiatek and men’s No 1 Jannik Sinner are top seeds, with Marketa Vondrousova and Carlos Alcaraz the defending champions of the singles titles.

Novak Djokovic will be seeded third as the 37-year-old attempts to win Wimbledon for a record eighth time following a five-set defeat to Alcaraz in a thrilling men’s final last year. Follow updates from the Wimbledon draw below as well as latest news ahead of the tournament

It’s already looking like a tough draw for Iga Swiatek, with Caroline Garcia, Jelena Ostapenko, and defending champion Marketa Vondrousava in the same quarter as the World No 1, before potentially facing Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals.

There is some confusion in the draw room! Already a couple of hiccups… being clarified now. I think some players were placed into the wrong line after Beatriz Haddad Maia was skipped. We continue.

When is the Wimbledon draw?

09:22 , Jamie Braidwood

The Wimbledon main draw will take place on Friday 28 June at 10pm BST, one day after the end of qualifying. It will be conducted at SW19. Fans can watch the men’s and women’s singles draws on wimbledon.com from 10am BST. You can also follow The Independent’s live blog which will have all the updates and key first-round ties.

How does Wimbledon determine the seeds?

The AELTC used to use a grass court seeding formula to determine the seeding for Wimbledon, however that was discontinued ahead of the Championships in 2021 and seedings now following the Tour rankings for both men’s and women’s singles draws.

Ons Jabeur ready for Wimbledon return despite heartbreak in back-to-back finals

08:36 , Jack Rathborn

“I think it’s going to be a tough moment coming back, but also a nice moment,” Ons Jabeur told Sky Sports.

“The last time I walked off the court at Wimbledon, it was really sad and I was really crying, so I hope I don’t get those memories back

“But I’m really looking forward to playing at Wimbledon. It’s one of those places which is my own paradise.”

Elena Rybakina pleased with form ahead of Wimbledon

08:24 , Jack Rathborn

With Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka having had little preparation on grass this season and injuries and illnesses wreaking havoc on the women’s tour, several players will be eyeing up Wimbledon as an opportunity for Grand Slam success.

Chief among the contenders is former champion Elena Rybakina, who has had a positive 2024, despite having to contend with illnesses throughout her campaign.

The big-serving Kazakh has won three titles in 2024 – Brisbane, Abu Dhabi and Stuttgart – and has recorded wins over top 10 players Swiatek, Sabalenka and Maria Sakkari.

“I’m really happy with the results this year,” Rybakina told reporters after her French Open quarter-final loss to eventual finalist Jasmine Paolini.

“I played so many matches. Also, good wins against top players. It’s a lot of ups and downs from my side, missing some events.

“I would like to play everything, but if the body is on the limit, I cannot do anything. For now I’m pretty happy.”

Aryna Sabalenka aims to make Wimbledon breakthrough

08:12 , Jack Rathborn

World number three Aryna Sabalenka will look to put the disappointment of two Wimbledon semi-final finishes behind her as she launches yet another bid to conquer the final frontier and win the first grasscourt title of her career.

“We just don’t play enough time on grass so I don’t have enough time to win a title,” the Belarusian told reporters this month, speaking ahead of her first-round win over Daria Kasatkina in Berlin.

“It’s not like I feel bad, I’ve made some good results on the grass and I feel really good. I think grass actually suits my game really well.

“So it’s not about the surface, it’s about the month of tournaments, the amount of opportunities that I have on a grass court.”

Jannik Sinner becomes Italy’s first top seed at Wimbledon

08:00 , Jack Rathborn

Millions of Italians, long known for their obsession with soccer, are about to find themselves torn between following their beloved Azzurri at Euro 2024 and tuning into Wimbledon to root for Jannik Sinner, Italy’s first top seed in the tournament’s history.

Sinner, who this month snatched the world number one ranking from Novak Djokovic, geared up perfectly for the challenge when he won his first grasscourt trophy at Halle in Germany last weekend.

Yet while the ginger-haired 22-year-old is grabbing most of the headlines, he is only the tip of the iceberg in a much broader Italian tennis renaissance, with a flourishing grass roots movement and seven men in the world’s top 60.

That strength in depth is matched only by the United States, which has the same number of top-60 players, while France and Russia boast five and Argentina four.

The Italians on average are younger, however, ensuring a pool of talent for years to come. Of the nine Italian men in the top 100, six are between 20 and 23 years old.

The turnaround has been dramatic for a nation that has traditionally struggled to produce top tier performers. Until Sinner won this year’s Australian Open no Italian man had lifted a Grand Slam trophy since Adriano Panatta in Paris in 1976.

In 2010, the country still had no men in the world’s top 50 and only three in the top 100.

Hannah Klugman, 15, misses out on Wimbledon main draw after qualifying defeat

Thursday 27 June 2024 17:54 , Jack Rathborn

One strikingly long row of makeshift grass tennis courts in the glistening surroundings of a south London public park. The £40m National Tennis Centre – with the luxury of year-round tennis courts – overlooking the scene, up the hill. Players on the periphery below the top-100 in the world slugging it out for one of 16 spots at The Championships next week. A serene environment, save for the agony and ecstasy of the players on court: welcome to the final day of Wimbledon qualifying.

It is a uniqueness to Wimbledon that qualifying does not take place at the site of the tournament, in order to save the grass courts wear and tear ahead of the fortnight. Instead, it takes place a few miles away in Roehampton at the aptly named ‘Wimbledon Qualifying and Community Sports Centre’, formerly the Bank of England Sports Centre. Look closer and you’ll see the likes of David Goffin and Richard Gasquet – both former top-10 players – grinding it out over the final round.

But amid that grind, there is no room for pedigree and stature: both lost in four sets.

Andy Murray offers mixed update on Wimbledon plans after spinal surgery

Thursday 27 June 2024 17:54 , Jack Rathborn

Andy Murray remains hopeful of playing at Wimbledon but admits it is unlikely to be in singles.

The 37-year-old, who confirmed he is planning for the Olympics in Paris to be the final event of his career, had surgery on a spinal cyst on Saturday after experiencing weakness in his right leg during a second-round match against Jordan Thompson at Queen’s Club.

Murray called it a day after only five games and revealed he had no choice but to go under the knife.

When is the Wimbledon draw? Start time, confirmed seeds, wildcards and more

Thursday 27 June 2024 17:53 , Jack Rathborn

The Wimbledon draw takes place this week as Andy Murray awaits his first-round opponent amid uncertainty over whether the 37-year-old will be fit to appear at the Championships for what could be the final time.

Murray, should he be fit enough to enter the draw, and the returning Emma Raducanu, who missed Wimbledon last year due to injury, will be unseeded ahead of the Championships and could therefore face anyone in the field.

Britain’s Jack Draper will be hoping for a favourable draw after lifting his first grass-court title in Stuttgart and then beating Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s while Katie Boulter is also set to be seeded for the first time after defending her title in Nottingham.
